TNPSC Group 4 Services 2025 – Selection Process

The selection process for TNPSC Group IV Services 2025 is designed to be simple yet thorough. It involves two key stages: first, a Written Examination, and second, Certificate Verification. Candidates who clear the written exam will be shortlisted for verification of original documents based on merit and reservation rules.

TNPSC Group 4 Revised Syllabus 2025 (Updated on 13.12.2024)

The TNPSC has recently updated the Group 4 syllabus and exam pattern, keeping in mind the current educational standards and job requirements. Here’s a detailed look at the revised scheme:

  • Type of Examination: Objective Type (OMR Method)
  • Standard: SSLC Standard
  • Duration: 3 Hours
  • Total Questions: 200
  • Maximum Marks: 300

The paper is divided into two parts:

  • Part A: Tamil Eligibility-cum-Scoring Test (100 questions – 150 marks)
  • Part B:
    • General Studies (75 questions)
    • Aptitude and Mental Ability Test (25 questions) – combined 150 marks

To proceed in the recruitment, candidates must secure at least 40% marks (i.e., 60 out of 150) in Part A. Only then will Part B be evaluated. Part A will exclusively be in Tamil, while Part B will be available in both Tamil and English.

Important Note for Differently-Abled Candidates

Candidates with disabilities who studied English as their medium can opt to take the General English Paper instead of Tamil. However, they must submit the required Disability Certificate while applying online. The General English paper will be set only in English, without any translation sections.

Certificate Verification Details

For posts other than Forest Guard, Forest Watcher, and similar roles, candidates shortlisted after the written test will be called for onscreen certificate verification. This process ensures that candidates genuinely fulfill all eligibility conditions. The list of candidates selected for certificate verification will be published on the TNPSC website, based on merit and following the reservation policy.

Selection Criteria for Steno Typist and Typist Positions

For Steno Typist Grade III and similar posts, selection will follow this preference order:

  1. Candidates who passed Government Technical Exams in Typewriting and Shorthand in Higher/Senior Grade both in Tamil and English.
  2. If the above is unavailable, those who cleared Higher Grade in Tamil and Lower/Junior Grade in English.
  3. Finally, candidates with Higher Grade in English and Lower Grade in Tamil will be considered.

Similarly, for Typist roles:

  1. Preference goes to candidates with Higher Grade certification in Typewriting in both Tamil and English.
  2. If unavailable, those with Higher Grade in Tamil and Lower Grade in English will be considered.
  3. Next, candidates with Higher Grade in English and Lower Grade in Tamil will be selected.

Special Procedure for Forest Guard, Forest Watcher, and Related Posts

Candidates who apply for Forest Guard, Forest Guard with Driving Licence, Forest Watcher, or Forest Watcher (Tribal Youth) posts will undergo a slightly different process:

  • After clearing the written exam, a separate list of eligible candidates will be announced.
  • These candidates must then complete an Endurance Test and Physical Standards Verification.
  • The endurance test involves:
    • Male candidates: 25 km walk within 4 hours.
    • Female/Third gender candidates: 16 km walk within 4 hours.

The Physical Standards Verification will check height, chest measurements, and other medical fitness criteria. The endurance test and verification will only be conducted in Chennai by the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests.

Transgender candidates can choose to appear either as male, female, or third gender, and standards will be applied accordingly. Successful candidates must also undergo a Medical Fitness Test conducted by a Medical Board at Chennai.

For Forest Guard with Driving Licence posts, there will be an additional driving test, arranged by the Forest Department, to assess candidates’ driving skills.

Selection Order for Forest-related Posts

Selection will be made in the following order:

  1. First, for backlog vacancies.
  2. Then, for regular vacancies.
  3. Finally, any shortfall vacancies will be filled exclusively from SC/ST candidates.

Medical and Physical Standards for Other Posts

For all posts other than forest-related ones:

  • Selected candidates must submit a Physical Fitness Certificate from a Government Medical Officer at the time of joining.
  • Candidates’ vision should meet Standard III or better. Those with defective vision must provide a certificate from a government eye specialist.
  • Physical standards are not as stringent as for Forest Department posts, but overall health and fitness are still important.
